8: The Possibili-teasering!

Hello residents of Scoville! My brothers Dante & Joaquin (the other two thirds of Sibling Revelry) and I really enjoy pitching ideas to each other. It’s absolutely what led to us to start this company to make our ideas a reality. I can’t speak for those guys, but I know we’re on to a good idea when we start bouncing the concept back and forth, and I can almost see the project taking on new life. Similarly, I know were on to a great idea when talking about a concept turns into talking about where we can take it in the future. Expansions, promo content… all those things I get excited about when I see them for my own favorite games. With that in mind, I’d love to share with you some of the possibilities we’ve talked about for Doomsday Peppers.

So, let’s just assume DdP gets funded. It gets made, and y’all love it just as much as we do. Lean a little closer to the crystal ball, and take a look at “things that yet may be”…

One thing about DdP that I get excited about is the future expansion possibilities. Having a theme centered around chaos and the end of world really leaves the door open in that respect. Here are just some of the expansions we’ve talked about:

“Factions”: This is one I’d really love to see happen. The idea centers around players taking on roles as members of various groups that would normally be found in the suburbs, but in an apocalyptick-ey satirical way! When a player is corrupted, (maybe 2 players for this expansion?), their “faction” is altered to a dark version of itself. This would probably come in the form of pre-constructed decks specific to each faction. The factions themselves could include: The PTA, Neighborhood Watch, the HOA, Girl Scouts (or some variant thereof that wouldn’t violate copyright laws). Maybe there would even be a way to make the expansion a “team vs. team” variant of DdP?

“Aliens”: To paraphrase Michael Stipe; “It’s the end of the world as we know it, so of COURSE aliens show up.” Having extra-terrestrials in the game would open up all kinds of possibilities. From advanced technology to weird events like switching bodies (“Now you’re the cultist!”). It would be a little hard to make sure the “garden” theme carried over, but maybe a step away from it might not be too bad?

“Gourd Grimoire”: This would be a small one, and pretty straightforward. It would be an optional deck of spell cards that would be added to the Equipment deck. Basically, it would give a lot of magic abilities to the Neighbors. Hopefully some weird, wild abilities.

“Survivors”: One thing we originally had in the game but later removed was Survivors. Having them in your corner gave you helpful bonuses or abilities. I hated to get rid of them, but there was so much going on in that version of Doomsday Peppers, it felt like playing Calvinball, so Survivors got cut. I would love to find a way to include them while keeping the game streamlined…

“Home Sweet Harm” or “Cults & Curb Appeal”: Speaking of the cutting room floor, another component that got removed from previous versions was called “Attributes”. They were cards that each player drew at the beginning of the game that determined the kind of house they had (mansion, boat house, etc.). the traits of their type of house could benefit (or hinder) the player for the entire game. I can’t help but wonder if there’s some way to bring the idea back to DdP, by way of an expansion?

Other additions wouldn’t count as expansions, but could be built into the Kickstarter, as add-ons or stretch goals. Again, these are just ideas, but let us know if one speaks to you!

Deluxe components: There could be a 3-D Corruption-ometer, or some kind of fancy “Player One” token. There’s always room for more theme!

More equipment: A simple boost to the number of equipment cards. This would be contingent on playtesting since we don’t want to throw off the game balance. It’s always fun to think about what could be. Especially when it’s an exciting creative endeavor like this. But for any of these to become a reality, the base game has to succeed! So, I promise to stay focused on making the base game as best as I can make it, if you promise to share your thoughts and, of course, spread the word about Doomsday Peppers: The Corrupting!
